Healthy Foods for Your Eyes
Taking care of your eyes should be a lifelong habit. Maintaining eyesight is all about getting all the right nutrients in order to preserve eye health. Here are some of the foods that you should try to add into your daily diet if you wish to maintain good eye health.
Green, Leafy Vegetables
Vegetables like lettuce, green cabbage and others contain antioxidants such as lutein and zeaxanthin. These are antioxidants that can lower the risk of cataracts and macular degeneration as shown in some studies.
Carrots
It has long been known that eating carrots are good for the eyes. But some people dont really know why. It is because carrots contain beta-carotene, a type of vitamin A that gives carrots their orange color. Beta carotene is said to help keep the retina healthy as well as keep the other parts of the eye to function smoothly.
Citrus Fruits and Berries
These fruits are rich sources of vitamin C, a nutrient that is known to help prevent or reduce the risks of macular degeneration and the development of cataracts.
Fatty Fish
Fatty fish such as tuna, salmon, anchovies and mackerel are rich sources of DHA, a type of fatty acid that can also be found in the retina. Low levels of DHA are known to be linked with dry eye syndrome, a condition where there is excessive dryness of the eyes that can cause eye discomfort, disturb normal vision and can eventually cause eye damage if left untreated. Increasing the levels of DHA may help in reducing the incidence of having dry eyes.
